Seminar: Reinvention of Work - # 60004

Instructor: Robert Kramer, Ph.D./Judy Brown, Ph.D.

Faculty Bio: Robert Kramer is Director of the Key and OPM Executive Education Programs and Distinguished Adjunct Professor in Residence at American University. In 2002 he received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the AU School of Public Affairs. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, a group of 400 professors in management education worldwide, and holds a PhD in Management from George Washington University. Before joining AU, he served in government for twenty-five years, including a stint on Vice-President Gore's National Partnership for Reinventing Government. In 1999 he was a Fulbright professor in Budapest, Hungary, teaching courses in Leadership and Organization Development. Since then, to promote democracy in post-Communist societies, he has been conducting leadership development programs in Central and Eastern Europe. In the US he speaks regularly on leadership topics at the American Society for Public Administration, the Council for Excellence in Government, the Brookings Institution, the American Psychological Association and other groups. His scholarly publications have been translated into German, Dutch and Hungarian, and include A Psychology of Difference (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1996).

Judy Sorum Brown is an independent educator, consultant and author whose work in organizations revolves around themes of leadership, change, learning, dialogue, diversity and renewal. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Michigan State University, and has served as a White House Fellow. She lives in the Washington D.C. area with her daughter Meg.

Course Description:This course will examine the relationship of life and livelihood seen as flowing forth from the same source, which is Spirit. The connection of life and work with Spirit will be explored to deepen meaning, joy, and purpose for the individual and society

    4. Anita Roddick, Business as Unusual.

     

Pre-Class Assignment: Please bring a 5-8 page paper to class that focuses on:

  • Ways in which you want to re-examine your current work
  • Why you wish to do so
  • Three paths you might follow to get there
  • Post-Class Writing Assignment: Using insights from readings, class discussion, your own experiences, write a 5-15 page essay on any of the following:

  • The importance of re-inventing leadership for the 21st Century
  • Transforming one aspect of your workplace
  • Ways in which insights from Creation Spirituality can enhance meaning and purpose in the workplace
