Course Description: In the folklore tradition of every culture there are mythological characters representing the Forces of Nature and Human Consciousness. They are also believed to be the Messengers of the Sacred. Students will be introduced to folklore characters from several cultures such as Elegba of West Africa, Elusu, the mermaid of Brazil, and a host of others drawn from cultures of the African Diaspora. We will examine their role in the tales followed by a discussion of how these forces have shaped the lives of individuals and communities. Students are encouraged to render their understanding and experiences into original creative works, which can then be performed in village theater style.

Students will acquire skills in cultural literacy and village theater performing arts. Theater performance arts include adornment, voice training and music appreciation. Class culminates in a performance.
