Course Description: Tapates, Brazilian & Guatemalan Ritual Sawdust Carpets

During the course of this week we will learn about the tradition of building tapates, large temporary ritual carpets made out of sawdust and used as part of the Easter holidays and Corpus Christi celebrations in Brazil and Guatemala. Students will see slides and videos which Jennifer Hereth took while participating in these holidays in Brazil. Students will also be given information about similar rituals in other cultures of the world and some suggestions of some small-scale applications of these rituals. Students will be taught to dye the sawdust, design the carpet, build a large scale tapate as a community and then process thru it as part of a closing event.
