Art as Meditation: Healing the Soul With and through Music- # 61045Instructor: Jackie Hairston Faculty Bio: Jackie is an accomplished pianist/composer and illustrator of the sacred/secular connection in music. She has a B.A. from Howard University and an M.A. from Columbia University. Jackie is former head of the music department at Merritt College, Oakland, CA. Jackie is an internationally known composer and arranger of Gospel, jazz and Broadway show tunes. She received a Certificate of Honor from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for her work with youth. Course Description: The basic principles of music associated with healing can be traced back to the ancient world. The values of music may be found in the writings of the Greeks, Egyptians, Persians, Hindus, Chinese and other learned nations of antiquity. It was, and still is, a part of the religious ceremonies of indigenous peoples throughout the world. The topics listed in the Course Outline will survey and utilize numerous offerings from various publications devoted to the same theme: the healing nature of music. Learning Objectives:
