THE UNIQUENESS OF OUR PEDAGOGY

Intellectual Intimacy and Creative Expression - What differentiates Wisdom University from almost every other educational institution of higher learning is its pedagogy and the integration its pedagogy catalyzes between intellectual rigor, artistic expression, physical movement and psychological growth. At most institutions of higher education, one engages in intense intellectual work, with testing that is largely based on one’s capacity to memorize information. Degrees are sought to prepare and qualify one for specific jobs. Art and physical exercise are generally optional electives. At Wisdom, the pedagogy is designed to balance body, head, heart and psyche as a single learning experience. Degrees are sought in order to deepen personal transformation, hone leadership skills, and prepare one for greater service to their community.

Each morning, students begin with physical movement and chanting, called “body prayer.” They then engage in a two and a half hour seminar, each of which has an extensive reading list and both pre and post papers. After lunch, students participate in a three hour “art as meditation” class in which they engage in a variety of artistic expressions. Creativity is not an elective at Wisdom University. Like the wisdom schools in antiquity, learning is predicated on the unity of mind and heart, body and soul. The day is completed with a ninety minute process session in which students and faculty integrate psychologically and emotionally the learning that is taking place

Intensives - Another differentiating aspect of Wisdom University is that learning takes place in “intensives.” At most institutions of higher learning, students attend two or three hours of classes per week over a quarter or a semester. At Wisdom, learning takes place in intensives that are either a week long (Monday through Friday/four credits) or over weekends (Friday through Sunday/two credits). The intensives allow for the intellectual intimacy and deep spiritual work that is the basis of real learning. Our experience is that when faculty and students come together all day every day, especially in a residential retreat setting, the learning is both deeper and more personally transformative.

A typical Intensive schedule includes:

8:40 a.m. Gathering
9:00-9:30 a.m. Body Prayer
9:30-12:00 a.m. Seminar
1:30-4:30 p.m. Art-as-Meditation
5:00-6:30 p.m. Process Group

Throughout the intensive, students and faculty work together to integrate “inner work” with “outer work.” In this way, the university reclaims the medieval meaning of a Wisdom School, as it engages the learning community in working together toward personal and social transformation.

Intensives are held monthly throughout the year. Students are referred to the Academic Calendar for more detailed information about Intensive schedules.

Spiritual Activism - The third differentiating aspect of Wisdom University is its ethos. Inherent in all Wisdom University programs is our commitment to spiritual activism. Most schools provide training for degrees but are careful to keep morality a private concern. Either that or they demand adherence to a particular sectarian belief system. At Wisdom, we have developed a program that blends immersion in sacred practices with hands-on social activism, enriching both the student’s interior journey and their service in the larger world. We offer this program as an expression of hope and optimism about what motivated individuals can accomplish.

There is little doubt in most people’s mind that the world is in crisis and that the prevailing institutions are incapable of effective response. Ours is a time when the confluence of economic disruptions, ecological degradation, social inequities, and political incompetence are coming together to produce an almost universal sense of unease, helplessness, even despair, among people and institutions, whether in the United States or around the world. We seem to be in a time of apocalypse, of the end of an age.

Indeed, we are giving witness to an extraordinary situation in which theological apocalypticism – the belief shared by tens of millions of evangelical Christians, for example, that we are living at the end of time – is conflating with a scientific apocalypticism – the fact that at any time weapons of mass destruction, ecological devastation or economic collapse could end the world as we know it. Even as the end of the world and the coming of Jesus is preached from the evangelical pulpits, scientists the world over are predicting dire repercussions worldwide from our collective refusal to deal seriously with global warming and a range of serious challenges. We are in a unique moment when theological belief and technological possibility are forming an unholy alliance that may weaken our collective resolve to survive.

In the midst of this there is something each and every one of us can and must do. We must deepen our spiritual awareness and refine our social commitments as a single integrated act of faith and service. In a time of crisis, spirituality without activism is arid intellectualism. Activism without spirituality has effect but little depth. What is needed is a radical fusion of the two, in which we experience both a deepening of our spiritual self through an immersion in sacred practices as well as a strong commitment to social activism, leading to an integration of the two that enriches our interior journey. This is why in addition to granting degrees, Wisdom University is developing leadership training in spiritual activism. Integrated as a single movement of soul and service, spiritual activism can transform lives and help change the world.

Wisdom University programs have been designed as an educational program for professional people, so that each person can return to their work as a leader in the transformation of society, bringing work and the sacred together. The Wisdom University program are structured in an open and flexible way for people working in a wide variety of professions, including health professionals, therapists, social workers, educators, clergy, lawyers, artists, business people and others.

Wisdom University offers the following Academic Programs:

1. Students can work toward a Masters degree in Indigenous Mind or a Masters degree in Wisdom Spirituality. A Bachelors degree is required for admission to either program. Seven Intensives and a thesis are required for completion.

2. Students can work toward a Doctor of Ministry Degree. A Masters degree or equivalency is required for admission. Ten Intensives, a candidate review, and dissertation are required for completion.

3. Students can work toward a Combined Masters and DMin degree. Seven Intensives in the Masters program and a thesis are required for completion of the Masters phase of the program. Then, eight Intensives and a dissertation are required for completing the D. Min. portion of the program.

4. Students can work toward a Certificate in Wisdom Spirituality. A bachelors degree is required. Seven Intensives and Certificate Review are required for completion of this program.

5. Students can participate in an Ordination Program that consecrates their work in the world as something sacred and which prepares them for spiritual leadership in their community.

All of our programs invite everyone to respond to the challenges of our times. We live in a day when modern values of consumption and dualistic relations with the natural world have led to a degeneration of life for all beings. Nothing less than a change in consciousness of who we are will enable us to make choices and shape the future in a way which will sustain life on this planet. is a vision and a practice that can awaken our imagination for transformation of consciousness and the living that flows from it.

Continuations for study beyond 3 years are possible in certain circumstances. Applications for continuation must be submitted in advance to the Director of the Indigenous Mind Masters Program.

Each completed week-long Intensive is counted as 4 credits and each weekend intensive is counted as 2 credits, allowing students to earn up to 28 credits for attendance and active participation. Students receive 1 credit for the Masters Review and 3 credits for a Masters Thesis . This brings the total to 32 credits that are required for the Masters degree.

Required Intensives

Four core intensives are required and three intensives are elective. Core seminars are organized under the following course headings:

The Masters Review process serves as a time during which faculty members in the program can explore aspects of this integration process with you, asking questions designed to stimulate dialogue, awareness, and further integration. Upon successful completion of the oral Masters Review Exam, the candidate is considered ready to pursue a thesis.

The Candidate Review process serves as a time during which faculty members in the program can explore aspects of this integration process with you, asking questions designed to stimulate dialogue, awareness, and further integration. Upon successful completion of the oral Candidate Review Exam, the candidate is considered ready to pursue a dissertation.

Doctor of Ministry Dissertation

A Doctoral Dissertation Manual is given to each candidate after the Candidate Review to guide students in the dissertation process. The following is a summary of the dissertation process:

Dissertation Committee: Acting in collaboration with a Director of Student/Faculty Relations, the candidate is expected to form a Dissertation Committee consisting of one Wisdom University faculty member who serves as chair of the committee, one content specialist, and one student peer. Both the faculty member and content specialist must possess a doctoral degree.

Project/Dissertation Proposal Abstract (P/DPA): this abstract, of no less than 100 words and no more than 150 words, summarizes the nature of the project and its relationship to Creation Spirituality and the reinvention of work. The abstract is filed along with the DFF and is signed by your three committee members. Because the abstract is a summary of the project, it is highly likely that your committee members may want an expanded description of your project and plans in addition to the abstract before signing the PPA.

Once a student’s DFF and P/DPA are signed and approved by the Director of Academic Programs, the student is officially considered an “ABD” (all-but-dissertation) candidate for the Doctor of Ministry degree.

a. Dissertation Approval: In their DMin Dissertation, students must clearly demonstrate an integration of principles or themes of Creation Spirituality and the Reinvention of Work. This must be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Dissertation Committee.

b. The student’s Dissertation must be fully approved by the Dissertation Committee and the Vice President of Academic Affairs prior to a student gaining final approval for graduation. The form for approval by the committee is found in the Doctoral Dissertation Manual.

Complimentary participation in a DMin Intensive is offered to individuals serving as content specialists on dissertation committees. If the content specialist would like to participate in an Intensive in order to be attuned to the process in which the dissertation candidate is engaged and to know more about the nature of Creation Spirituality, s/he is welcome to attend one Intensive at no tuition cost.

Dissertation studies may be focused on a variety of topics such as research, a creative project, teaching project, or other projects that clearly demonstrate the application of Creation Spirituality principles or themes to a students’ work. Additional guidance on DMin projects is offered during Dissertation meetings on Friday of each Intensive or can be obtained from the Director of Academic Programs.

GENERAL ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Introductory Opportunity (IntroOp)

Persons who meet the qualifications for being a prospective Masters, DMin or Certificate student in the Wisdom University programs, and would like to gain an experience of the program prior to fully enrolling, may attend a single Intensive to assess if they would like to enroll.

“IntroOp” participants attending an Intensive are required to do the same work as matriculating Masters, DMin and Certificate students, including the pre-paper. IntroOp students are not required to complete a post-paper unless they choose to enroll in the Masters, DMin or Certificate programs, and wish to receive credit for their IntroOp experience. The cost for the IntroOp is $1600 per week long intensive.

A person who later elects to enroll as a Masters, DMin or Certificate student and has met all the course requirements (including writing the post-paper) will be granted credit for this Intensive if s/he enrolls within 1 year of having attended an IntroOp Intensive. The $1600 cost of the IntroOp week will be applied toward the tuition in the degree/certificate program.

An individual may attend only one Intensive on an IntroOp basis. To attend additional Intensives, a student must enroll as either a Masters, DMin or Certificate student.

In order to enroll in the Masters, DMin or Certificate program the IntroOp participant must:

1. Write the post-paper for the Intensive attended and receive a grade for the Seminar.

Those auditing are expected to:

  • Read the required readings for seminars prior to the class.

  • Attend classes all five days to maintain continuity and integrity of the class.

  • Respect that students fully enrolled in the program have first priority to be in dialogue with faculty.

Cancellation of Agreement

Students have the right to cancel the agreement for the program of instruction, including books, materials and supplies purchased at the university, and other goods related to the instruction, as outlined in the Enrollment Agreement, at any time. Students may cancel the agreement up to 6:30 p.m. of the second business day of each 5-day Intensive. A “business day” is considered to be a day in which students are scheduled to attend class.

Cancellation of the Enrollment Agreement will occur when a student gives written notice of withdrawal to the university. Students will be given a Notice of Withdrawal form at the Orientation Session.

Students may inform Wisdom University of their decision to cancel by mail, hand delivery, email or fax. The written notice of withdrawal, if sent by mail, is effective when deposited in the mail, properly addressed, with postage prepaid.

Refund Provisions

1. Students must complete a Withdrawal Request Form and receive the appropriate signatures. This is the preferred method of withdrawal. By completing the Withdrawal Request Form, the student will ensure that he/she has met all State and university requirements and will be protected from problems that may arise in the future.

2. Students may give written notice to the Registrar at Wisdom University. If written notice is mailed, the notice will take effect on the postmarked date of the letter.

If a student withdraws from the program after the period allowed for cancellation of the Enrollment Agreement, the university will remit a refund, less the registration fee, if applicable, within 30 days following the withdrawal. The student is obligated to pay for educational services rendered and for unreturned equipment. Instructional fees and Art-as-Meditation fees are refunded on a pro rata basis.

The student refund for students that withdraw from the program prior to completion of an Intensive, will be computed on a pro rata basis and will be calculated as follows:

1. The total tuition paid will be divided by the number of days attended in the Intensive (NOTE that the Registration fee of $100 is NON-REFUNDABLE)..

2. The total pro rata tuition will be applied against the amount the student has paid for tuition..

3. Any payments in excess of the pro rata tuition (excluding the Registration fee of $100) will be refunded to the student.

The withdrawal notice should be made in writing and sent to the Registrar.

Temporary Locations & California Intensive Requirements

The Administrative and Financial Headquarters of Wisdom University are in San Francisco, CA. Currently Intensives are also offered at temporary locations around the San Francisco Bay area; in Asheville, NC; in New York City and around the world. For current information, please consult the Schedule of Courses. Students may study in any of the temporary locations. However, in order to be granted the Masters Degree, the Doctor of Ministry Degree or a Certificate, it is required that at least two Intensives be taken in California.

There are two purposes for this:

1. It is important for students to experience studying in the prime center for Wisdom Spirituality and the special setting of the Bay Area.

2. Wisdom University is licensed by the State of California and a time of residency in California is required.

Program Prerequisites

Students are expected to take core seminars as their first seminars after they enroll or as soon as the seminars are offered. Students are also expected to comply with all admissions and registration requirements, and the prerequisites outlined in the Getting Admitted and Getting Registered sections of this Handbook.

There are no prerequisites for Art-as-Meditation Classes.

Licensing

All programs at Wisdom University are licensed by the State of California, Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education, in conformance with Education Code Section university4900. Wisdom University is not currently accredited.

The Admissions Office will work with prospective students on the Admissions process, and facilitate the review of all program applications.

Admission Policy

Wisdom University accepts students throughout the year at each Intensive.

Admissions Application

A completed Admissions Application should be sent to the Wisdom University Admissions Office. Students are advised to keep a complete copy of their Admissions Application for their files. The admissions packet must include:

An original, completed application form.

A non-refundable application fee of $50 made payable to Wisdom University.

A 1500-word essay describing how the applicant intends to integrate these years of study with their work in the world and continue the transformation of society. The intention of this essay is for a focused assessment of a student’s readiness for advanced study, as well as a chance to articulate insights and intentions for pursuing this program.

Two current letters of recommendation (faxed copies are not accepted). It is recommended that students invite one professional reference and one personal reference to write the letters, based on their knowledge of 1) your ability and desire to study, 2) your hope to apply your new studies to your current work, and 3) your chances for success in a highly intensified and often self-initiated course of study.

Official (sealed) transcripts of all previous degrees earned at institutions of higher education. It is required that the transcripts be sent to Wisdom University directly from the Registrar(s) of prior institutions.

For Doctor of Ministry applicants, a résumé demonstrating work experience. Minimum Requirement: at least 3 years of work experience since the most recent accredited degree.

International Student Visas

Wisdom University does not pay for or directly obtain Visas for international students. This is because the University is not accredited.

Protecting Student Privacy

Wisdom University is committed to protecting you from any incursion of your privacy. Information about you is never sold or given at random to outside agencies that wish to solicit your business.

Maintaining Student Information

At the orientation session, students are required to complete an emergency information sheet containing contact name and telephone number. In the event of an emergency, the university would use the information provided by the student. It is the student’s responsibility to keep this information current and any changes should be made with the Registrar.

Permanent Change of Address

When you move, you must inform the Registrar’s Office of your new address and telephone number. The university will often have the need to contact you, but most importantly this information can be essential in case of emergency. Failure to update your address and telephone promptly does not relieve you from responsibility for being aware of the information that the university attempted to deliver to you.

Change of Name

If you change your name, official documentation is to be given to the Registrar’s Office. The documentation must show both the old name and the new name. Documentation may include a marriage certificate or court order for legal name change.
