THE ARTIST AS SHAMAN/HEALERWorkshop Leader: Robert Lentz Date: April 20 9:30am - 5:30pm Description: For many centuries in what we now call the First World, artists have been reduced to the role of decorator or illustrator by the dominant culture. The deeper spiritual dimension of our work has been lost. As a result, artists are often alienated from the population at large, and our culture stumbles forward like a blind person, deprived of the insights only artists can provide. We will discuss the spiritual dimensions of the creative act, the discipline that nourishes creativity, and the prophetic gift art offers society. We will draw on ancient Christian tradition and will also consider the aesthetics of other cultures, especially those of mesoamerica. The workshop will take the form of lecture and story-telling, with opportunity for group interaction. Presenter: Robert Lentz is a Franciscan friar who lives and works on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. He is a master iconographer trained in the school of Photios Kontoglou. He has conducted workshops on art and spirituality throughout the United States and in Italy, and has trained apprentices for the past 12 years. His innovative icons are known throughout the world.
