Techno Cosmic Mass: Pink Triangle Mass: Honoring the Story of the Gay and Lesbian Community
We live in a world that needs our soul work and requires us to come together in community. All the institutions of our day, social, religious, political, are seeing the value of grass roots community building. The Techno Cosmic Mass is a postmodern worship experience rooted in Western liturgical tradition, that integrates ecstatic music and dance, urban shamanism, multimedia imagery and Eastern and indigenous spiritual elements. Each Techno Mass is an experiment in bringing together people of diverse ages, faiths and cultures in shared prayer which holds true to our ancestral traditions, respects and honors our differences, and highlights our common human bonds. The name, Techno Cosmic Mass, is deliberately chosen: "Techno" refers to the sacred use of technology in our worship -- computer generated art, multivision projection and sounds systems -- and digitally composed and mastered dance music at hat encourage us to celebrate with our bodies. "Cosmic" brings in cosmology, the sacred connection of all creation s described to us by ancient wisdom and the new science. The "Mass" is an ancient Judeo-Christian form of ritual which brings a community together to experience a common story, bring praise and thanksgiving to the Creator, and through communion, offer spiritual sustenance for works of compassion and justice in the world.
The Howard Thurman Ritual Center is located just three blocks from the University of Creation Spirituality (UCS) in downtown Oakland, California. Originally known in the 1920's as the Sweets Ballroom and Floral Depot buildings, this prime location was once the night-time hot spot for big bands and swing dance. Early in 1998 Matthew Fox's non-profit organization, Friends of Creation Spirituality, negotiated to purchase the buildings as an ongoing effort to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Oakland. Urban spirituality is a strong principle in the work of UCS and this ritual center and performance space is being created as a place for the Oakland community to gather in the downtown area. "Part of our working philosophy here is to resurrect downtown Oakland," reflects UCS founder, Matthew Fox. The Techno Cosmic Mass, an ecumenical ritual, is held regularly at Sweet's Ballroom, when it is not On the Road with Matthew Fox and Friends. See the Public Events Calendar for these and other upcoming events being held in the Sweets Ballroom at the (now dedicated) Howard Thurman Ritual Center. The Howard Thurman Ritual Center is located at 1933 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612. The building is near the 19th Street Bart station.
