Creation Spirituality and the Mission of Art
Matthew Fox and Artist Alex Grey in Dialogue
How can the mission of the artist come into alignment with the universal creative Spirit? Creation Spirituality seeks to integrate the wisdom of western spirituality and global indigenous cultures with the emerging scientific understanding of the universe and the passionate creativity of art. Come hear a diaglogue on the themes of the Divine Imagination, Sacred Art, and how we of the post-modern era can use our creativity as spiritual practice. Alex Grey is an artist whose paintings have appeared in venues as diverse as the album art of the musical group TOOL, covers for Newsweek magazine, a feature on the Discovery Channel, and recently in an article about his work and life in the New York Times. Grey will share, via slides, his visionary and idiosyncratic interpretations of western spiritual archetypes such as Adam and Eve, Transfiguration, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and the Cosmic Christ as additional points of departure for discussion. Matthew Fox, Ph.D., founder and president of the University of Creation Spirituality, will discuss the themes he explores in his new book Creativity: Where the Divine and the Human Meet, which will be available in stores October 1. |

Fox is a renowned author and postmodern theologian, who has written 26 books including the best-selling Original Blessing; One River, Many Wells; Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Lessons for Transforming Evil in Soul and Society; and The Reinvention of Work.
Grey is best known for his paintings of glowing anatomical human bodies, images that "x-ray" the multiple layers of reality and reveal the complex integration of body, mind, soul and spirit. Grey's unique series of 21 life-sized paintings, the Sacred Mirrors, present the physical and subtle anatomy of an individual in the context of cosmic, biological and technological evolution.

Artist Alex Grey is best known for his paintings of glowing anatomical human bodies, images that "x-ray" the multiple layers of reality and reveal the complex integration of body, mind, soul and spirit. Grey's unique series of 21 life-sized paintings, the Sacred Mirrors, present the physical and subtle anatomy of an individual in the context of cosmic, biological and technological evolution. His paintings have appeared in venues as diverse as the album art and stage set of the Grammy award winning band, TOOL, album art of the Beastie Boys and Nirvana, covers for Newsweek magazine, a feature on the Discovery Channel, and recently in an article about his work and life in the New York Times. |

Grey's artworks have been exhibited and performed throughout the world and are chronicled in three books: Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey, the recently released monograph, Transfigurations and his philosophical text, The Mission of Art. An audiotape of Grey's reflections on art as a spiritual practice, entitled The Visionary Artist, was produced by Sounds True. Grey co-edited the historic book about the conjunction of Buddhism and Psychedelics, Zig Zag Zen.
Grey has exhibited and lectured worldwide, including, Tokyo, Manaus, Barcelona, Amsterdam and throughout the U.S. At his recent mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Grey presented the Sacred Mirrors and other works of painting and sculpture.
Alex lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife, the painter, Allyson Grey and their daughter, the actress, Zena Grey.
